Doncho M. Donev, M.D., Ph.D
Specialist in Social Medicine, Full-time Professor and Director of the Institute of Social Medicine, Faculty of Medicine in Skopje, Macedonia.

Dr. Donev received his MD at the St. Cyril and Methodius University in Skopje, Macedonia, in 1973, where he completed his specialization in social medicine in 1981. From 1983 to 1985 he had his postgraduate studies of social medicine in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and later on received his PhD in 1993 at the Ss. Cyril and Methodius University Medical Faculty in Skopje. He realized one-year postdoctoral studies in public health (Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship Program) at the Emory University School of Public Health in Atlanta, GA, USA, in the academic year 1993/94. Since 2003 he has been Regular/ full-time Professor of Social Medicine at the Ss. Cyril and Methodius University Faculty of Medicine in Skopje.

Prof. Donev is a Public Health expert with more than 30 years experience in the field of public health (social medicine). He has been Director of the Institute for Social Medicine, Ss Cyril and Methodius University Medical Faculty in Skopje, Macedonia, since 1998. His professional and research interest include broad scope of activities related to prevention and control of non-communicable diseases and other priority health problems, health status and needs for health care of the vulnerable population groups, organization of health systems and health care reforms, health economics and quality of health care, health education, and health care management.

He is a national counterpart of WHO with an active contribution for preparing the European Strategy for Prevention and Control of Non-communicable Diseases, as well as for preparing the National Strategy and Action Plan for Prevention and Control of Non-communicable Diseases in Macedonia.

For a long time Prof. Donev has been involved in the health sector reform, being an active member of several national committees aiming to rethink and reorganise the health system, introducing new financing mechanisms (Health insurance), health workforce planning and development. At present, he is working on implementation of the National Strategy and Action Plan for NCD Prevention and Control in Macedonia, being the country focal point for WHO in this respect.

Prof. Donev has a wide experience in networking with Public Health experts in South Eastern European countries. Since 2000 he has actively participated in a broad scope of activities within the Stability Pact Training and Research Cooperation in South Eastern Europe countries (project 2000-2007: ) and the Forum for Public Health, since 2007 (FPH-SEE): research and organization of continuing health and medical education programs for health professionals in SEE countries; he was co-editor of the PH-SEE Book on Health Systems and Their Evidence Based Development (2004), and Editor of the FPH-SEE Book on Health Promotion and Disease Prevention (2007), ( ).

Since 2008 Prof. Donev is a member of the MetaNET project, Netzwerk akademischer Netzwerke, University of Bielefeld, Germany, and of the PHResearch-Net project, University of Maastricht Since 2010 he is also a member of the Charite University Berlin School of Public Health Project “Visibility of Public Health Teaching and Research in South-East European Countries”.

Prof. Donev is an editor of several books, author of many book chapters, and over 200 papers and articles presented and published in Proceedings and healthcare journals.
